Introduction to Administering Windows Server 2012 R2 70-411

00:00:00

Hello my name is James Conrad. And it's my pleasure to be with you here on the 70-411 series for administering Windows Server 2012. We have a whole lot of things to talk about in this particular series. It's one of the longest series I've done for any server topic.

00:00:16

And you'll see that we have jam packed topics as we go along here. For example, we'll start off here just with deployment. Deployment on its own is a big topic. But here we're also implementing Windows Deployment Services or WDS. There's a lot of configuration, a lot of different ways to make that work, a lot of flexibility as well.

00:00:36

Many things you'll need to know about of course for exam purposes, we'll also take a look here at Active Directory. This is really the skeleton of all Windows operating systems right now in the corporation. It's going to give you primarily your authentication.

00:00:50

That's how it's going to identify which users are legit, which computers are legit. Also we'll take a look here at managing the domain controllers. There's a lot of different tasks that have to be performed properly when it comes to managing your domain controllers.

00:01:05

Such as having to figure out which ones you need to have universal group membership casting turned on with, which ones you need to have certain roles on. So it's a lot of different kinds of roles like that. Then we'll take a look also at account policies.

00:01:18

And this is going to determine what kind of passwords your users need to have. You can also configure exceptions to the password rules that you configure there. And then we'll take a look at group policy objects, these are critical to any corporate environment using Active Directory.

00:01:33

These will pretty much control everything that your users can see and do. And it has a lot do with the security of your environment as well. So this is a critical item, you'll very much need to know about practically, and for exam purposes. And then we'll talk about virtual private networks, which is predominant in today's networks.

00:01:50

With so many traveling users and people that need to connect to the home office, and they need to do that securely. We'll take a look at a couple of newer technologies here as well, as well as how to configure those. We'll take a look at network address translation, which is a great way to conceal IP addresses behind a network device.

00:02:07

And also RADIUS, which is an additional way to properly authenticate your clients. And then we continue on with many other topics including network access protection. This is a very important way to make sure that you don't have clients connecting to your network that are less secure than the rest of your network.

00:02:25

Make sure that they've had the appropriate updates, antivirus signatures, and things like this. We also take a look here at File Services Resource Manager, which is a great way to do a lot of things, including quotas, file screens, configuring reports on how your storage is being used.

00:02:41

We'll take a look at the Distributed File System or DFS, a very important way to make sure especially in larger organizations that you have consistent data across all of your offices, including your branch offices for example. That data may need to be secured properly as well.

00:02:56

In addition to NTFS permissions, you're going to need things such as the encrypting file system, which can be used to encrypt individual files, or folders, or BitLocker to encrypt a entire hard drive. We take a look at monitoring, which is a big topic in this particular exam series as well.

00:03:11

And this will include a lot of things such as data collector sets, how to configure an alert. In case something comes up, you want to be alerted immediately to it. You can do that, you can monitor the performance in real time, or log it, all different kinds of ways of doing that.

00:03:25

And then we'll also talk here, as we conclude, with Windows Server Update Services, or WSUS. And this is a very vital way to make sure that all of your Windows clients have the appropriate updates. And then the next thing we have going on is some updates that occurred after Windows Server 2012 was released.

00:03:43

About a year later, they released R2. Now, this includes several new features and some little tweaks that Microsoft has made to the operating system. Now, Microsoft has nicely given us a document here. This is available on the 70-411 exam objectives page.

00:04:00

You've already seen it I'm sure. And this is just a document that they've given us, 411_OD_R2.pdf . This tells us things that are added in January, 2014. And you can see here over on the right, there's some things that aren't changed. But there are also some things that are added new.

00:04:15

Now here's the thing, most of the new stuff that they show us in that document, I already taught it when I taught the 70-411 the first time around. Why? Well, most of that is just because I like to be thorough when I teach. I don't want to leave anything out.

00:04:31

So I taught a lot of those things already the first time around. Let me drag that back over. A lot of these things over here on the right, really are not new in Server 2012 R2. These things appeared for example, this one right here, this all appeared under Server 2012.

00:04:47

That's not new. This is something else that's not new-- where is it? File management task, I taught that the first time around. Scheduling performance monitoring, I taught that first time around. Patch management in mixed environments, that's easy, mixed environments in WSUS relates only to the current version of Windows or anything older.

00:05:06

I went through that as well. So all of those things or most of those things, I already taught the first time around. But there is some new material such as driver groups and packages. Now, this is something that I taught the first time around. So that on itself is not new.

00:05:21

But there are several new PowerShell commandlets relating to driver groups and packages. So I go over those. This is also new and really useful, by the way. I wish they had come up with this a long time ago. DFS database management, which will help us clone a DFS database, recover DFS databases, as well as to optimize the replication.

00:05:40

Actually, I did talk about optimizing replication previously. But I go over it a little bit more here as well. And then web application proxy is a great way to make your web applications available to internet users and at the same time provide some kind of authentication.

00:05:55

Now the exam objective talks about that in terms of using it with pass through mode, not requiring any authentication. But it doesn't really have much relevance unless you talk about the kind that needs authentication as well. So I go over both types.

00:06:09

There's also virtual accounts, which we'll talk about here. This kind of similar to other service accounts that you might need, except that they're local. And we'll also talk about Kerberos policy settings. This again, is nothing new. In fact, it's nothing new in Active Directory.

00:06:23

It's been there since the first version of Active Directory in fact. It's just that Microsoft wanted to add that to the list of things that you have to know for the 70-411. Because apparently they don't think that there's enough there already. And then there's GPO caching.

00:06:37

This I actually like, it's new. And this is something we talk about where GPOs are cached on local clients to improve performance. And we'll talk about that as well. Now from this point forward, I do want to point out that I have done the 70-410 for CBT Nuggets, as well as the current one, the 70-411.

00:06:53

From this point forward, all the other topics will be taught by Don Jones, Greg Shields, or Timothy Warner. All wonderful trainers and very good friends of mine. So with that being said, let's go ahead and get into our very first Nugget.
