70-417 R2 Course Introduction

00:00:00

All right folks it's my pleasure to introduce to you the MCSA upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2. This is covering the 70-417 exam objectives. But I want to say right before I even go into our little bullets over here on the right, that we really strive at CBT Nuggets here, to show you ways to do things that work in the real world, not just for exam objectives.

00:00:25

Really exam objectives just provide kind of a nice outline of things that we probably would need to know anyway, and we're just going to go ahead and go with those. But I do want you to be aware of the fact that I'm not just teaching you how to pass a test, I'm really showing you how to administer servers with this whole series, starting with the 70-410.

00:00:42

As you may be aware, this exam is actually a combination of three different exams. The 70-410, 70-411, and 70-412. The 70-410 starts with installing and configuring servers. You'll learn all different kinds of ways of being able to do this. For example, you'll be able to install a Server Core, you'll be able to use features on demand.

00:01:04

We'll talk here about migration from previous versions of Windows, all those sorts of things. As well as working with offline images, deploying roles and all different sorts of things in that arena. And then we'll also take a look at configuring local storage, although we'll address that in a lot more detail probably in the 70-412 section of this.

00:01:24

So we've got a lot going on with that. When it comes to configuring server roles and features, our big emphasis there is how to configure servers for remote management. That's a big part of administering servers because we're not always in the server room and we are not always standing right at the server.

00:01:39

There's usually racks full of servers and you probably can administer most of the things you need to do from, say, a Windows 8.1 desktop in your cubicle. There's also a great deal of information that we have here for you on how to configure Hyper-V. Boy, this is really one of those groundbreaking technologies, virtualization in general, that is really taking the server world by storm.

00:02:01

And if you don't know how to do any kind of virtualization, you're going to be very far behind in how to run servers in the real world. Whether it's Hyper-V or some other product, but Microsoft does have a very good product here. Also, we'll take a look at how to install and administer Active Directory.

00:02:17

In particular, how to installed domain controllers, how to install domain controllers from media, or work with the DNS records that are necessary, how to fix DNS records if they're somehow broken or incomplete. And we'll even take a look at how to configure Active Directory infrastructure as a service in Microsoft Azure.

00:02:36

And then as we move into the 70-411 here, we take a look at how to deploy, manage and maintain servers. A lot of this really has to do with monitoring. And that's pretty critical because you're gonna have to troubleshoot probably every day of your career, you've got to troubleshoot something.

00:02:49

Well, what are you gonna look at to try to track down what the problem is? A lot of that comes from things like data collector sets, alerts, events of various types, event subscriptions to collect information from remote machines, so that's very important.

00:03:01

We also take a look at monitoring services and access network services and access. In particular, this is going to mostly focus on direct access, which is a new way of making VPN connections automatically for your clients. And they don't have to find a connection of some kind or anything like that.

00:03:17

It's all done for them automatically, really nice way to go there. There's network policy infrastructure here also. This is going to mostly cover network access protection. This is a great way to make sure that your unhealthy clients, in other words, ones that haven't been updated or don't have a firewall turned on or have some other security sensitive problem, can be shoveled off into kind of an isolation network, we used to call them quarantine networks, until they're fixed.

00:03:41

And then they can join the remainder of the network. Well NAP allows us to do that. We can also configure and manage Active Directory. And a pretty critical part of that is working with the Operations Master roles. How to transfer or seize those roles, how work with what we call a read-only domain controller, how to clone domain controllers.

00:03:59

We also look at how to maintain Active Directory, such as doing things such as backups, restoring Active Directory if it gets corrupt, performing recovery of deleted objects. Lots of really good stuff there with configuring and managing Active Directory.

00:04:12

And then we take a look at how to configure and manage group policy processing. It's very important to know the order of precedents that goes on there, the scope of management, how to block policies, how to enforce policies, security filtering, loop-back.

00:04:25

All kinds of things involved with this that are pretty critical. And group policy objects is one of the most powerful functions that you have as an administrator in Server 2012. So it's critical to have a very good understanding of how they work. Now I do want to point out something that's different in the way this series is recorded.

00:04:45

For the 70-410 over here, which I already discussed, and the 70-411 which I just now discussed, the videos are going to be shorter than most of the videos I've done for CBT Nuggets in the past. So the length of them is oh, maybe seven to 12 minutes for the most part.

00:04:59

Some of them are 15 or 20, but most of them are a little bit more on the shorter side. And I break up the topics into many shorter videos, that's why there's a large video count for this particular series. Now the 70-410 and 411, I actually recorded those last.

00:05:13

I recorded the 70-412 first. And this was recorded before we made a change to the length of videos that we create here at CBT Nuggets. So some of these will be longer, but if you need a break, the player should be able to resume right where you left off if you pause right in the middle of one of those particular Nuggets.

00:05:31

I just wanted you to be aware of some of the length differences there between the previous section and this one. And then as we get started here, we'll be looking really at high availability. A big part of that is clustering. It's such a critical role to understand for the modern day administrator.

00:05:45

We also take a look at file and storage solutions. This is going to primarily deal with Dynamic Access Control. And believe it or not, we're going to work with a couple of superheroes to make this work. [LAUGHTER] We're also going to be looking at business continuity and disaster recovery, it's another critical thing you have to understand because you have to have a good backup solution.

00:06:02

But, you also have to have a good restore solution in case something goes wrong. We'll look at traditional backup methods as well as some of the newer things, such as configuring Azure backups. We also look at network services, primarily dealing with IPAM, or IP address management.

00:06:17

A very important thing as you have a large organization with a lot of scopes and a lot of DHCP servers, helps you to keep track of all of that. There's also access and information protection, primarily dealing with Active Directory Federation Services.

00:06:29

We'll, I've got to tell you, this whole series the 70-417, is a big series. There is a lot of information crammed into this series, and I think you'll do really well in learning what you need to learn here for both practical administration as well as for the 70-417.

00:06:45

With that said, let's go ahead and get started with our next Nugget.
