Introduction to 70-410: Installing and Configuring Windows Server 2012 R2

00:00:00

So you want to become an MCSA in Windows Server 2012? Well, my friends, you've come to the right place. 70-410 is where your journey begins. So welcome to 70-410 and thanks for joining us here at CBT Nuggets. My name is Garth Schulte. I'll be your host as together we walk through every single objective this monster of an exam throws our way.

00:00:21

Now our goal for this Nugget is to get up to speed on what this exam contains. We'll go over all the objective sections, and I also want to get you familiar with the Virtual Nugget Lab, which is a fantastic way to follow along, do while you learn, and get that crucial hands-on experience that you'll need for the exam and the real world.

00:00:39

Let's get started. The 70-410 is all about installing and configuring Windows Server 2012 R2. You can see it covers a real wide range of the most popular and common technologies that you'll be working with on a daily basis as a sys admin. Now we've laid this course out very much like Microsoft has laid out the exam.

00:00:57

In fact, most of these Nuggets map directly to an objective. Some Nuggets cover multiple objectives. So as you can see, this course is laid out into six primary objectives, what I like to call sections. Now every time you hit one of these sections, the very first Nugget in that section is going to give you an overview and go over all the bullet points, all the things you're going to need to know about in that section, give you some tips and tricks, and introduce you to the machines that we'll be working with in the Virtual Nugget Lab.

00:01:22

Now your first order of business whenever approaching a Microsoft exam should always be to get very familiar with these objectives so you know what to expect and you know what to study for. Now over here on the right, I have a short URL to the 70-410 exam page.

00:01:38

This is case sensitive, by the way. So enter that into a browser. Fire it up. I'm going to do the same thing. And it'll take you right to this page. Now over here on the left, we get some good information about this exam-- the intended audience, the technology that it's based on, and the certification that we get credit towards.

00:01:54

Passing the 70-410 will automatically get you an MCP, a Microsoft Certified Professional. And it's the beginning to the MCSA, the Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate. You'll need the 70-410, 411, and 412 to achieve the MCSA. This will also give you credit towards an MCSE, a Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert.

00:02:14

And there are separate tracks after the MCSA with the MCSA being a prerequisite to acquire that certification. All right, let's scroll down until we see Skills Measured. This is we're going to find all six of those objective sections. You can expand these.

00:02:27

They'll be broken out into subsections, and we'll have a bulleted list of all the things that we need to know for this exam. And our mission, our goal for this course is to cover every single one of these topics. Now your first mission is to get familiar at a high level with what each one of these sections contains, right?

00:02:46

So you'll know that Install and Configure Servers is all about installing and configuring servers, but also configuring local storage. Remember, when you take the exam you're going to get a big pool of questions. Roughly 15% to 20% of those questions is going to be on installing and configuring servers.

00:03:00

So it really helps to understand the content that's covered in each one of these sections. So if I were to ask you for the second section here, do you know what configure server roles and features consist of? If you were to tell me file servers, print servers, and configuring servers for remote management, awesome.

00:03:14

You know what's in that section. So do that for each one of these sections. Another tip-- once you've completed all the Nuggets in a section, head back into here and have a quick conversation with yourself about each one of these items. So quickly explain what it is.

00:03:29

If it's a task-oriented item like this one right here, Configure IP Address Options, envision where you would accomplish that task in the GUI. List the command line tools you would use as well as the PowerShell cmdlets you would use to accomplish that task.

00:03:41

If you can do all those things successfully and you're confident in it, then great. You're ready for that. If not, I would document that and we would consider that a knowledge gap. And even sometimes when I document these things, I'll put how confident I am in it, low, medium, high.

00:03:55

And then once you're done, you'll hopefully have a really short list of gaps that you can then, again, rewatch those Nuggets, replay around in the Virtual Lab, or exhaustively Google that subject until you're confident in it. Another great exercise when prepping for a Microsoft exam is just picking out a random objective and, again, having a conversation with yourself.

00:04:14

For instance, what can you tell me about how to configure a client and server for PXE boot? Well, I can tell you that on the server side we need to configure our DHCP scope with option 66 and 67 to point our clients to a TFTP-compliant server, like WDS, so I can pull down a boot image and install an operating system over the network.

00:04:32

On the client side, we need PXE supported network cards. We can configure that in the GUI using DHCP manager or in PowerShell using the Set-DHCPServerv4OptionValue cmdlet for an IPv4 scope. See? So if you can do that for every single one of these items, you will ace the 70-410 exam.

00:04:52

And again, that's my mission is to get you familiar with all of these items. Now you're probably well aware that Microsoft is very serious about PowerShell. It's the future of administration, and especially automation, here in our Microsoft environments.

00:05:05

And exams are no different. Microsoft has really started pumping PowerShell questions into their exams and 70-410 is no different. So if you're not comfortable with PowerShell, I would advise running through our PowerShell 4 Foundations course by yours truly.

00:05:19

If you are comfortable with it, awesome. You're not going to need to be a PowerShell expert for this exam. You're just going to know the basic set of cmdlets to accomplish this specific task, as well as some of the common parameters associated with them, which is why almost everything we learn how to do in the user interface I'll also show you how to do using PowerShell.

00:05:39

So you'll be learning about a ton of PowerShell cmdlets throughout this course. And I'll give you some good PowerShell tips and tricks along the way. We'll also see how to do this using the legacy CmdShell. So we've got all of our bases covered between GUI, PowerShell, and CmdShell.

00:05:53

Now let me get you up to speed on the Virtual Nugget Lab. This is a great place, again, for you to get some hands-on experience to follow along. And you don't need your own equipment. All you need is, of course, a CBT Nugget subscription and a browser.

00:06:05

Now this Nugget level means that every Nugget that has a lab has a lab that is tailored to that Nugget. So as we start out installing configure servers, we're just going to one machine. In fact, our very first lab is installing Windows Server. We'll walk through the installation process on a single machine.

00:06:20

As we get further down and we get into things like networking and DHCP, we're going to have labs that could contain up to six machines all networked together for you to play with and learn that topic. Let me give you an example. Here's one of our labs.

00:06:34

This is a lab on configuring basic and dynamic disks inside of our install and Configure Servers section, subsection Configure Local Storage. So when you launch the lab, which again, I'll show you how to do here shortly, it's going to launch into a separate tab in your browser.

00:06:49

And it'll just take a minute here to build the lab environment. If you have one machine it'll take generally about a minute to a minute and a half. If we have a five machine lab, it may take up to two minutes. But when it's all set, it'll launch us into this really nice, easy to use lab UI and you're on a virtual machine in your browser.

00:07:07

How cool is that? And you'll have plenty of time to do the lab and plenty of time if you want to play in that environment and explore and do whatever you want. You can do whatever you want to these machines. These are not your local machines. You don't have to worry about breaking them.

00:07:20

You can do whatever you want. And if you do break them, you can just relaunch the lab and you'll be at the starting point once again. So that took just under a minute to fire up. You can see on the right, we have our navigation here. So if we have multiple machines we can easily flip between them.

00:07:34

I'll walk you through the log in process every time we get into a lab. You also have up here the Commands menu, so if you need to send any commands over, this is the menu you'll use for that. And that's really about it. Very, very simple user interface to get the hang of.

00:07:47

Here's another example. This is a four-machine lab, and this is actually covering the objective that we were just looking at, Configure Client Server for PXE Boot. So we're going to use this lab to install an operating system over the network. We've got our DHCP server here.

00:08:01

We've got our WDS server here. We've got our bare metal client with no operating system on it, so our goal is going to be to install an operating system over the network onto this machine. And of course, we've got a domain controller that's set up as a Server Core installation type.

00:08:15

So these labs are a great way to follow along, to practice, to learn quickly. They're free with your CBT Nugget subscription, so make sure you utilize them. Let me show you how you can launch them. Now once you're on the course page, which I'm sure you are right now if you're watching this Nugget, I just went to my buddy Anthony Sequera's new Windows 10 course, but if we scroll down-- now we're on the course introduction Nugget, right?

00:08:35

You're not going to see a virtual app here on the right hand side. Once you hit a Nugget that has a virtual app, which most of ours do, I'm going to choose this Performing a Clean Installation Nugget for instance, and over here on the right hand side then you will see Virtual Lab.

00:08:51

And here is the link. So if you click on that, it's going to open up a brand new tab and launch right into that lab. As easy as that. Also, don't forget to do our built-in CBT Nugget quizzes, I threw some doozies in there for you, as well as the Transcender practice exams.

00:09:07

So between our Nuggets, our quizzes, our practice exams, and our virtual labs, you have everything you need to conquer 70-410. With that, good luck and kick butt. I hope this has been informative for you, and I'd like to thank you for viewing.
