Introduction to Site Owner Responsibilities

00:00:00

Hello and welcome. My name is Brian Alderman. I'm a trainer here at CBT Nuggets, and I'm excited to spend some time with you talking about mastering SharePoint 2013 site ownership. Being a site owner is not an easy job. There's a lot of components involved, and I'm going to help you get comfortable in getting the most out of SharePoint as a site owner.

00:00:19

There are several topics involved when you talk about site ownership, but I'm going to start at the low level and just do an introduction to what's expected of you as a site owner. Then we're going to dig into creating and managing sites in SharePoint 2013 and introduce the new SharePoint 2013 apps, which are a very powerful option available to us.

00:00:39

We're going to look at customizing your site. You're not going to want the normal out of the box look, and one of the ways to customize your site is to create, use, and configure web parts. They're another very powerful feature that we have available to us either out of the box, or they can be downloaded.

00:00:53

Then we're going to talk about content management. These three topics right here are regarding content management-- using content types, configuring a document center, managing the life cycle of a document. It's important to understand those three topics when we're talking about document management.

00:01:09

Security is probably the biggest concern we have as a site owner. We want to make sure that we're securing our content at different layers. We're going to look at how to get into granular security permissions in SharePoint 2013. We're also going to jump back out and explore some miscellaneous site settings that you have available to you as a site owner, and then I'm going to throw a curve ball at you because I'm going to turn on publishing, and I'm going to discuss the different publishing options that become available as a site owner in SharePoint 2013.

00:01:38

In our first Nugget of this course, we want to make sure that we are all on the same playing field, so we're going to begin by having a discussion around your responsibilities as a site owner. Then we're going to see where we are as site owners in the big picture of the SharePoint logical infrastructure.

00:01:54

We'll then take a quick tour of the CBT Nuggets site, and while we're in there, I'm going to show you why we're using Linda's account and that she has site owner's permission as we walk through this course to help you understand what actions you can perform as a site owner.

00:02:09

As a site owner, we have many responsibilities, including creating and managing your site structure, all the sub-sites, the list, the libraries, workspaces. We also are responsible for customizing our sites. We normally don't want the out of the box look, smell, and taste, so we're going to make them more appealing by adding web parts and images, maybe even tables.

00:02:29

We also want to make sure that we improve productivity of our users. So we want to make sure we configure the navigation in our site so our users can easily access our content. Speaking of content, we want to make sure that we implement an efficient document management policy.

00:02:43

We may have to create new columns, new content types, add information management policies, maybe even go out and create a document center. Most importantly, we want to make sure our content is secure, so we have to make sure we understand how to configure security in our sites.

00:02:58

I like to begin each course by helping you get a big picture of where we fit in. In this case here, we are site owners, so we're going to be working in this tier here called sub-sites. I suggest that you attend the Site Collection Administration course, which discusses this level here, and if you go to the Collaboration course, that's going to be talking about content in here.

00:03:19

We are in the tweener mode. We're between Site Collections and Lists and Libraries, but I will be referencing Site Collection options, and that's going to be the tier above us. As you'll see when we go through this course, I've recorded this Nugget at the end of the course.

00:03:35

So when I go in and give you a tour in a few seconds, you're going to see a lot of the tasks that we've talked about are already part of our CBT Nugget site. Here we are in our CBT Nugget site. This is the end of our course, even though this is the intro Nugget, and you're going to see how this all came about as we go through future Nuggets.

00:03:56

It's important for you to understand we are logged in as Linda throughout the entire course. Why is that important? I'm going to go to Site Actions and Site Settings, then I'm going to People and Groups, and then jump over to CBTN Root Owners, and she is part of the Owners group.

00:04:13

So we are performing all tasks throughout this course as Linda, and she is in a Site Owners group. Let's go back and look at Site Actions and Site Settings at the end of the course, and you're going to see that we added Publishing. This will make more sense to you in future Nuggets.

00:04:28

I want to show you that these items are different than this site over here, where Publishing is not enabled. Site Actions and Site Settings. I'm still logged in as Linda, who is an owner, but now the options are different where Publishing is turned off, versus here, where Publishing is turned on.

00:04:44

I just want to set the stage for the upcoming Nuggets in this Mastering SharePoint 2013 Site Owners course. In the first Nugget, we walk through your responsibilities as a site owner. We see in the big picture where we fit in as site owners. We've explored the CBT Nugget site, and I've indicated that Linda's account that we're going to be using throughout the site is a site owner.

00:05:07

I also showed you during the tour that we started out with a non-publishing site, which is what I showed you with our MTP site, but as we walked through the course, we ended up with a CBT Nugget site that you saw during this intro. Well, I certainly hope this Nugget was informative for you, and I'd like to thank you for viewing.
