Welcome to GNS3 v1.x

00:00:00

My name is Keith Barker, and on behalf of the entire CBT Nuggets family, welcome to this GNS3 version 1.X Fundamentals course, where you and I are going to put the "fun" into "fundamentals." Let's begin. Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to create a network topology in a virtualized environment like GNS3 just as quickly as we could draw one on a paper?

00:00:22

Well, the great news is that in GNS3, we absolutely can create topologies just that fast. And in this introduction video for the course, I wanted to give you an overview of what to expect, and then we're going to get right into the content. For starters, you and I are using GNS3 version 1.X for this Fundamentals course, and all the demonstrations I've done on Windows version 8.1.

00:00:43

Now, it is true that GNS3 also has current versions for Linux as well as Macintosh. And the interfaces are very similar on those platforms, as well. It's been scientifically proven that it's tough to run an application unless it's installed, so we're going to start off by installing GNS3 1.X on Windows.

00:01:01

We'll add Cisco's IOS to the mix. We will set the idle PC together so that we don't have a CPU that goes through the roof when trying to run GNS3. We'll walk through how to choose a terminal emulation application, including the use of SuperPuTTY, which allows multiple tabs and the rearranging of Windows for our command line access to each of the devices.

00:01:20

We'll walk through how to connect the devices logically together in the topology on GNS3, how to use the virtual PC simulator that comes built in as part of the all-in-one installer for Windows. We'll leverage the generic GNS3 layer 2 switch that can support access ports and trunking.

00:01:37

We'll also demonstrate how we can use the 16-port switch module that goes inside of a Cisco IOS router that can provide a boatload of layer 2 switching functions, including VLANs, trunking, EtherChannel, and spanning tree. We'll also take a look at how we can set up our basic custom config so that we don't have to do as much tweaking every time we bring a new router onto the topology.

00:01:58

And we'll finish up the course by taking a look together at some tips and techniques that you and I can both use to get really, really good at this technology, and some ways to stay motivated to reach our goals. We also have in the library here at CBT Nuggets an older GNS3 course, and it was based on .8 version of the application GNS3.

00:02:18

And in that course, it demonstrates running it on Windows 7, the Mac OS, as well as Linux. And I wanted to make you aware that the difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8 is pretty significant from the perspective of GNS3. A lot of the things that used to work in Windows 7 in the old version of GNS3 .8 don't quite work the same with Windows 8 and the newer version of GNS3.

00:02:41

And the reason I mention that is because if you go back to that older GNS3 course, I want you to be aware of that premise-- that it is running .8 of GNS3, and is running on a slightly older version of Windows. So in that older course, if you like those same results, you need be using the same versions of the operating system and GNS3.

00:03:00

And in this course, the GNS3 1.X Fundamentals, we're going to be focusing all on the newer technology. And I want to keep this introduction really short so you and I can get right into the meat, and that starts in our very next Nugget, where we're going to install GNS3 version 1.X on a Windows 8.x platform.

00:03:17

I appreciate you joining me for this Nugget and for this course. I hope this has been informative for you, and I'd like to thank you for viewing.
