Welcome! Let's get started!

Hello. My name is Keith Barker. And on behalf of the entire CBT Nuggets family, I'd like to welcome you to this hands-on lab preparation course for CCNP Switch Version 2.0. Let's begin. I can still vividly remember the first class I went to on Cisco switching.

It was back in the '90s, and I learned all about multilayer switching. And in those days, we had a route switch module that was used for the routing function in a switch chassis. And also back in those days, we had CatOS. Over time, the technology has gotten a lot better.

But one of the interesting phenomenons, as I was sitting there enjoying the class and learning about the techniques and the technologies-- and it wasn't until I got to the hands-on portion where I started to realize, hey, I don't quite understand that as well as I should, which drove me to go a little bit deeper to learn it even that much better.

And then with additional practice, I became very comfortable at the implementation, verification, and troubleshooting of a multilayer switched environment. Well my friend, today, with the better technology, we still have the same challenge. We need to understand the concepts and also get hands-on practice with the technology.

So I want to make you aware of something I like to refer to as the dynamic duo regarding CCNP Switch 300-115. And that dynamic duo is two courses available to you from CBT Nuggets. The first is the CCNP Switch course that Jeremy Cioara has created. It is excellent.

And the second is this course right here, the CCNP Switch 300-115 hands-on labs, which is focused on the hands-on practice regarding the technologies that you learned in Jeremy's course. So I wanted to make sure you're aware that both of these tools exist-- both of these courses exist.

And the core purpose of both of these courses together, used by a learner like you, is to become very, very competent at these technologies, not just in theory but also in practice. And as a cool side benefit of going through these two courses and doing the hands-on practice that I'm encouraging you to do, the skills you gain will also translate into better job performance and the ability to support your environment that much better.

Now to practice hands-on, you're going to need some type of a environment to practice with. So first of all, we are not going to practice on any production networks. That is a huge no-no. We want to practice in a safe environment. So if you have a simulator that does a great job of simulating multilayer switches, that's great.

If you don't have access to a multilayer switch simulator, I would strongly recommend purchasing three used multilayer switches. And I'm going to give you some recommendations here in just a moment. And one of the benefits of having three multilayer switches available to you is that they can be used not just for the switch course, but they can also be used for CCNP route, as well as for CCNP troubleshooting.

And they can also be leveraged and carried in to your CCIE studies, if that's the direction that you are headed. There's lots of different flavors of Cisco multilayer switches. Some are incredibly, incredibly expensive and great-- no doubt. But they're very expensive.

For a lab environment, we'd probably want to get some older maybe end-of-life devices that can still do what we need them to do. And in that light, let me talk with you about the images. You'd want to get an IP Services image running on these multilayer switches or what's called the Enhanced Multilayer Switch Image-- EMI.

So S is Standard. E is Enhanced. And with the IP services or the EMI image, that will give you the bells and whistles you need, such as running routing protocols, doing IP routing, and a lot of other features that we traditionally have on an IOS router, except because it's a switch, it can do the routing and switching functions all in one box, due to it having the appropriate image, which is IP Services or EMI.

Now you might be thinking, oh, Keith, Keith, I don't want to go out and buy any hardware. Well, check this out. Back in the '90s when I was first starting with Cisco, I bought a couple Cisco routers, and I paid close to $6,000 for these used Cisco routers.

And I'm not expecting the average learner to make that type of investment. However, and this is not a limited time offer, today, currently you can get a multilayer switch-- a used one-- with the EMI or IP Services image for under $100. Let's take a road trip, just for a moment, out to eBay and take a quick look.

So here on eBay, let's do a search for 3550 EMI. And we'll press Enter. Let's click on Buy It Now so we can see real prices. And we'll search based on the price and shipping, lowest first. So we have some parts. We'll scroll down a little bit until we get to a real switch.

Here's one that's for repair only. And we'll skip that. There's a power supply. Here we go-- a 3550 24-port EMI switch for $35, plus $25 shipping. So for about $60, you can get a 3550 with the EMI image. So you get three of those. You're at $180, and now you've got three switches to use in your lab environment.

And there's a whole boatload more in that same kind of a price range. You can also get the little GBIC interfaces to plug in here for the fiber connections. So if you wanted to link these up, you could get GBICs for each one of these, buy some fiber connectors, which are really, really cheap as well, and you could link them together at gigabit speed.

In fact, if we had three of them, what we could do is this. We'd buy six GBICs-- I think they go for like $15 apiece. And we could daisy-chain them together like this, and like this, and this guy would go all the way back to the first. And now we've got three switches all connected together at gigabit speed.

It's super easy and super inexpensive. And because these are multilayer switches with the EMI image, if you wanted any one of these ports to be a Layer 3 routed interface, we'd simply go to that port, do a No Switchport, and-- poof-- it's a Layer 3 interface.

Use it like a router. Or of course, we could create switch virtual interfaces and have logical VLAN interfaces anywhere we wanted to create them. If we wanted to do EtherChannel, we'd get some crossover cables. And we'd just connect them together. For example, we'd take eight cables and make an EtherChannel bundle with eight physical links as part of it.

We apply the configurations on both switches. We balance the ports and-- poof-- our EtherChannel's in place. So all told, the threes switches, plus the GBICs and the fiber connections-- you could probably get all of that for less than the cost of the certification exam.

So it's a great investment in yourself, and it's also a boatload of fun to play with the physical gear. So we're keeping this introduction short so we can get right to the labs. And some of these labs, for example, the ones that are based on HSRP, we can do with GNS3 if we'd like to.

Or we could do it with Viral if we'd like to. If you need training on GNS3 or Viral, we've got a GNS3 1.x Fundamentals course, as well as a Viral course. And the other thing is this. If you're in the process of ordering some switches and it takes a while for them to get in, you can start off on the HSRP labs that are first up in this course and do those on GNS3 while you're waiting for your switches to arrive.

This is the very last Nugget I've recorded in this course. The entire course is ready to go. I'm super excited about going through every Nugget with you step by step as we implement the technologies of CCNP Switch. Hey, thanks for joining me. I hope this has been informative for you.

And I'd like to thank you for viewing.
