Welcome, my friend, to the world of Check Point. Let's begin. I'd like to verify that this course will indeed have value for you, and to do that, I'd like you to ask yourself the following questions. Are you involved with the design, implementation, the maintenance or operation of a Check Point network?

The next question I'd like to ask you is this. Do you think that in your near future, you will working with or going into a Check Point environment that you need to support or maintain? Or how about this one? Do you currently manage a group of technicians and engineers who are supporting the network, and you'd just like to have a better understanding of the big picture of how all the pieces fit together?

Are you considering pursuing a CC essay certification from Check Point? Now, the great is this. If any of those answers are yes, then this course absolutely does have value for you, and you, my friend, are in the right place. Now if you, like me, enjoy learning new things, you've probably also discovered that anything that you learn new, if you can relate it to something that you already know, or at least are familiar with, the learning process happens much more quickly and much more effectively.

So in that light, let me share with you some basic skills that if you already possess, it will be very helpful as we move through this course together. Number one, I would recommend that you come prepared with a Network+ skill level. That doesn't mean necessarily that you've taken the Network+ certification exam, but you have a basic understanding of networks.

You understand the basics of IP addressing, the concepts of how networks operate, and the natural progression, for example, might be beginning with Network+, and then moving on to a vendor certification. Maybe CCENT, or CCNA from Cisco. And then Juniper has their family of certifications, all the way from entry level and on up.

Hewlett Packard has theirs, and Palo Alto has their certifications. And so Network+, for those people who are just getting started, is kind of like a gateway drug into the rest of the vendors, and it's a really good place to start. So if you are brand new to networking, or you know somebody who's brand new to networking you might want to steer them towards the Network+, which is a great place to start.

So anywhere at that level or beyond is fantastic. Take everything you know and bring it along, and we'll increase that knowledge as we take a look at adding Check Point to that list of technologies and software that you now can begin to master. What I've also discovered is it's going to be very helpful if you have some exposure to a virtual platform, such as VirtualBox, which is from Oracle, and it's absolutely free.

VMware has a lot of flavors. They've got VMware Workstation, they've got vSphere. That's the ESXi flavor. And it really doesn't matter which one that you have exposure with, but it would be helpful if you did have some exposure in working with at least one of those virtual environments.

And the reason for that is because of what I'm going to encourage you to do in the course, and that is to practice along as we go through. Building your skills and practicing your skills by building your own virtual environment. That way if you want to try something, add a rule, change a policy, you can do all that a safe practice lab environment without having to touch any type of production network.

So because practicing is so important in the process of watch, learn, and conquer, what I would encourage you to do is have some virtual environment to play in, such as Virtual Box, or any one of the VMware options, like on a Macintosh you could use Fusion, on a Windows platform you could use Workstation.

If you have a dedicated vSphere box, you could use ESXi. The other thing I would encourage you to get your hands on is the Check Point install and upgrade R76.Gaia.iso. And that would mean either the actual image file or the CD, because the cool thing is this.

Look at what Check Point's done for us. They've given us the opportunity to install Gaia, and then on top of that, install the manager server software, or the gateway server software on those servers, and then practice with them. And what they do is they give us a 15 day window to use virtually all the features.

So that gives you, my friend, the opportunity to not only think about the interface, but actually to install the software, install the features, and then practice with the real interface as you build your skills and ability to create policy, push it out to the firewalls, and verify that it's actually working.

Another option, not as good, but it's an option, is to go ahead and use the SmartConsole demo software, which you can download directly from Check Point's website. And what I'd like you to get is R75.40 or higher. And the reason is that R75.40's interface is similar enough to R76 from a SmartDashboard perspective that it can give you the opportunity to play with the SmartConsole utilities, like SmartDashboard, SmartViewMonitor, SmartViewTracker, and the other really cool tools that we're going to be learning in this course.

I'd like you to take a look at this column right here, and as you look down the list of these topics that are all covered in the Check Point course, I'd like you to ask yourself which of these items, if any, jump out at you. As hey, that's interesting, or what is that?

Now, I realize that we're all coming from different backgrounds and different levels of experience. There may be some people coming to this course with years of Check Point experience who just want to top off the tank for R76 and find out what some of the new features are, and what it looks like.

And at the same time, there's gonna be other people who are brand new to Check Point altogether. So to optimize your time, here's what I've done. Inside of each video I've put in something called an opt out question. So for example, if you jump into LDAP integration, at the very beginning of that video there's gonna be some opt out questions.

You can read those, and if you know the answers to those questions and you're comfortable with that technology, and that gives you the opportunity to say, you know what? I've got this. I'm going to go ahead and skip to the next video, or another video of interest.

And that can optimize your time. Also, let's say you are new to Check Point, you've gone through the entire series, it's great. You want to go back and review a topic. You just jump into that topic, for example, maybe policy packages and database versions.

You look at those opt out questions, you think, you know what? Yeah, I'm a little fuzzy on that. I think I'll spend these 15 to 25 minutes and review that, and you're in and out. Boom. And that way you can review and use this as a resource on an ongoing basis.

For example, it's very likely that the LDAP integration is not something that you have to do or set up every single day. However, if it has been a few months and you have to go back and do it again, hey, just come back to this one video, review the details, and you're ready to go.

So leverage those opt out questions that are in the videos. I also have this video at the very end, which is tips for success with the CCSA exam. The objective for this course is for you, my friend, to learn how to configure and manage and operate a Check Point deployment.

Now as an added side bonus, if at the end of this course you've gone through the labs, you've practiced it, if you want to go ahead and also take the certification exam as a demonstration to anyone who's watching that you are competent in these technologies, if you've gone through the entire course with me and you labbed it up as I asked you to in every single video, you'll be ready for that certification.

It'll be a nice byproduct of the effort that you've put in as you watch, learn, and conquer. This topology right here represents the network that you would and I, as we proceed Nugget by Nugget through this course together, are going to build. We'll install Gaia, we'll turn this one into a manager, we'll turn this one into a gateway, we'll link them together.

We'll create policy, we'll push it out, we'll test it, we'll get networking. And trust me when I say it's gonna be an absolute boatload of fun. So the reality is I created the last Nugget for this course yesterday. It's all buttoned up and ready to go.

I'm so excited about sharing it with you. Your action item right now is simply to start the next video, and let's begin.
